About Av

Av is a month of contrasts — profound mourning followed by comfort and joy. Tisha B'Av (the 9th of Av) is the saddest day in the Jewish calendar, marking the destruction of both Temples, the expulsion from Spain (1492), and other tragedies. Yet tradition teaches that the Messiah will be born on Tisha B'Av, and the 15th of Av (Tu B'Av) is one of the happiest days, a day of love and celebration. The name "Av" means "father," hinting at God's fatherly compassion even in times of hardship.

Mazal of Av: Leo (Aryeh)

The Lion (Aryeh) represents the lion of Judah and kingly power tempered by compassion. In Kabbalistic thought, Av's mazal reflects the sense of hearing — the ability to listen deeply and comfort others. The lion's roar can destroy or protect; those born under Aryeh possess natural leadership and the strength to transform mourning into joy.
