First Mitzvah Given to the Jewish Nation

G-d showed Moshe the crescent new moon and commanded the very first mitzvah given to the nation of Israel: to sanctify the new month. 'This month shall be for you the head of months' (Shemot 12:2). This commandment established the Hebrew lunar calendar and designated Nisan as the first of the months.
