Rav Gershon Ashkenazi

Born in Germany (1625-1693), he studied under the Bach in Krakow. He served as chief rabbi of Austria until the expulsion of 1670, and then as Rav of Metz, Germany. He authored Avodas HaGershuni. Much of what we know about the Chmielnicki massacres is based on this work.
