The body of the Maharam of Rothenburg (Rav Meir ben Baruch, 1215-1293) was released for burial in 1307, fourteen years after his death in the fortress of Ensisheim. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery of Worms. R' Alexander Susskind Wimpfen gave away his entire fortune to ransom the body, and was buried alongside him. Both graves miraculously survived the Nazi desecration of the cemetery.
