Born in Uzda, near Minsk, Belarus (1895-1986), he was the son of Rav Dovid Feinstein, a descendant of the brother of the Vilna Gaon. His mother was Feige Gittel, daughter of Rav Yechiel of Kopolia. He joined the yeshiva of Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer in Slutzk at age twelve. He was rabbi of Luban from 1921 to 1937. Fleeing the Stalinist regime, he settled in New York as rosh yeshiva of Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim. He authored Igros Moshe, Darash Moshe, and Dibros Moshe, and was widely regarded as the supreme halachic authority for Orthodox Jewry in North America.
