Hear / Listen

The Shema ('Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One') is the most essential declaration of Jewish faith, recited morning and evening, and traditionally the last words a Jew speaks before death. It is the first prayer taught to Jewish children and is inscribed on the parchment inside every mezuzah. The call to 'hear' implies not just listening but understanding and acting on God's word.
