Toda comes from the root y-d-h, which also means to acknowledge or confess. In ancient Temple times, a korban todah (thanksgiving offering) was brought to express gratitude to God. Gratitude is considered a foundational Jewish value, and the word modeh (related root) begins the first prayer recited each morning.
