About “Hand” in Hebrew

Yad means hand and carries deep symbolic weight in Jewish life. Yad Vashem (a memorial and a name) is Israel's Holocaust memorial. The yad is also the pointer used when reading the Torah scroll, shaped like a small hand to avoid touching the sacred parchment. The expression 'yad b'yad' (hand in hand) represents unity and partnership.
