About Rosh Chodesh

Rosh Chodesh (ראש חודש), literally "head of the month," marks the beginning of each new month in the Hebrew calendar. Also spelled Rosh Hodesh, it is one of the oldest observances in Jewish tradition, dating back to biblical times when the new moon was declared by witnesses before the Sanhedrin.

Today, Rosh Chodesh is observed with special prayers including partial Hallel, the Musaf service, and a Torah reading from Numbers 28:1-15 describing the new moon offerings. Some communities also observe it as a semi-holiday with festive meals.

The Molad (מולד) — the calculated moment of the new moon — is announced in synagogue on the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh (called Shabbat Mevarchim). The molad is expressed with precision down to chalakim (חלקים), where each chelek equals 3⅓ seconds. There are 1,080 chalakim in an hour.

When the previous month has 30 days, Rosh Chodesh is observed for two days — the 30th of the previous month and the 1st of the new month. When the previous month has 29 days, Rosh Chodesh is one day only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Rosh Chodesh?

Rosh Chodesh (also spelled Rosh Hodesh) is the first day of each month in the Hebrew calendar, marking the appearance of the new moon. It is considered a minor holiday with special prayers and Torah readings.

Why is Rosh Chodesh sometimes one day and sometimes two days?

Hebrew months alternate between 29 and 30 days. When the outgoing month has 30 days, Rosh Chodesh is two days (the 30th of the old month and the 1st of the new). When the outgoing month has 29 days, Rosh Chodesh is just one day.

What is the Molad and how is it calculated?

The Molad is the calculated astronomical new moon. The average lunar month is 29 days, 12 hours, and 793 chalakim (about 29.53 days). Each chelek is 3⅓ seconds. The Molad is calculated by adding this interval to the previous month's Molad, starting from a fixed epoch (Molad of Tishrei, Year 1).

What are Chalakim?

Chalakim (singular: chelek) are the smallest unit of time in the Hebrew calendar. One chelek = 3⅓ seconds. There are 18 chalakim in a minute and 1,080 in an hour. This ancient system predates modern timekeeping and is used to calculate the exact Molad.
