The birthplace of King David and the setting of the Book of Ruth. Rachel, the beloved wife of Jacob, was buried on the road to Bethlehem — her tomb remains a pilgrimage site today. The prophet Samuel journeyed to Bethlehem to anoint the young shepherd David as future king of Israel, choosing him from among the sons of Jesse.

Samuel anoints David in the midst of his brothers
וַיִּקַּ֨ח שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל אֶת־קֶ֣רֶן הַשֶּׁ֗מֶן וַיִּמְשַׁ֣ח אֹתוֹ֮ בְּקֶ֣רֶב אֶחָיו֒ וַתִּצְלַ֤ח רֽוּחַ־יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד מֵהַיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וָמָ֑עְלָה וַיָּ֣קׇם שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ הָרָמָֽתָה׃
Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of GOD gripped David from that day on. Samuel then set out for Ramah.

Naomi and Ruth arrive in Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest
