Modeh Ani is the first prayer recited upon waking each morning, thanking God for restoring the soul after sleep. It is so short—just twelve words—that even small children learn to say it. The prayer expresses gratitude for the gift of a new day and sets an intentional tone of thankfulness before one's feet even touch the floor. It requires no hand-washing or preparation, unlike other prayers.
